A heat pump is an all in one cooling and heating system. They are a unique kind, because they can do the work of both a furnace and an air conditioner. A heat pump is a device that uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. Heat pumps are usually used to pull heat out of the air to provide heat to a home or office building. They can be switched into reverse to cool a building. For summer months, it works just like an air conditioner.
It removes heat from inside your house and transfers it to the outdoor air. During winter temperatures above 38 degree F or above it extracts heat from outside air and transfers it to your home. For optimal efficiency and comfort, a heat pump can be combined with a gas furnace, and air handler with electric heat strips in one dual fuel system. When you start shopping for a heat pump, there are a few things you need to look for. First, manufacturers rate the efficiency of most heat pumps in two ways: SEER and HSFP ratings. Higher SEER and HSFP ratings indicate a more efficient unit.
